PANKHURI- SUPPORT THE GIRL CHILD PROGRAM

Support the Girl Child Program
Changing Lives.............
It is accepted that education and learning are critical for the progress and growth of the country. For girls the challenges to become employable are insurmountable. Boys traditionally get preference in the family for higher education. Girls have to attend to household work in addition to their studies. They cannot cope with the pace at School. Girls who want to go for higher education cannot join programs from home. Therefore it is a big challenge for girls from poor families, to access quality education and become self-dependent.
It is very often said when you educate a boy, you educate an individual and when you educate a girl, you educate an entire family. An educated woman has the self-confidence, skills as well as intelligence to understand the need to be a better daughter, sister, wife and mother and make a progressive family.Education is the only tool with which a girl can empower herself and eventually her family. In this background NGO SAPNA began a program in 2010 named PANKHURI;.

The overall objective of this project is to provide an opportunity to rural girls from disadvantaged families to get quality education and conductive environment for overall development. Initially the program started for girls from underprivileged families from Village Kaduki.
Kaduki village is located in Alwar district, adjacent to Vijay Mandir. It has population of 993 and comprises 162 households. The main occupation of the villagers is farming and cattle rearing. There is just one upper primary school in village. For girls of poor families effectively higher education is not in reach.Later we started to enroll underprivileged girls in programs from other nearby villages like Thekra etc.

Goal & Objectives
The goal is to provide opportunity to girls from disadvantaged families to get quality education and conducive environment for overall development. The program aims at overall development of the girls. This begins with hygiene, overall turnout, discipline, punctuality and nutrition, in addition to learning and personality development.
The objectives are:
  • Improve the educational status of underprivileged girls;
  • Ensure quality education of underprivileged girls;

    Current Status of Program
    Presently our programs cover a total of 43 girls, they all are from different age group and studying in different classes.

    Program Approach
    The economic condition of the family is one of the parameters for selection. Individual sponsors support their fees, uniform, books and transportation. The girls are admitted to a reputed school of the city named National Academy and V.L Memorial School. They are groomed and learn about hygiene and discipline. The program Coordinator monitors the academic progress of the girls in the schools. He keeps in touch with the teachers and gets both the formal and informal report of each girl. The girls covered in this program report to Vijay Mandir and after their dress, turnout and hygiene are checked they are sent to school in bus owned by SAPNA. After school the girls come to Vijay Mandir where they -

  • Complete their homework with teacher assistance
  • Attend library session to improve their reading skills;
  • Attend computer classes to learn IT skills;
  • Are mentored for team building, PT exercise, opportunity to participate in literary and cultural activities, voluntary work;
  • Are provided nutrition before they leave for home.
  • Regular parent teacher meetings are conducted to make the parents aware of the progress of the girls and other issues which they need to attend at home.
