One-third of 39 million blind people in the world live in India. There are 13 million treatable blinds in India which is a huge number. Our experience has been that the elderly poor and marginalized living in the rural Alwar are unable to access eye treatment due to the absence of affordable eye care secondary centre nearby or due to widespread ignorance and apathy of near ones.
To address the problem of blindness and bridge the gap of lack of services in rural areas of Alwar district, NGO SAPNA in 2007 partnered with Venu Eye Institute & Research Center, a leading eye hospital in Delhi. Its mandate was to take eye care to the doorsteps of the people of Alwar by organizing eye camps in remote rural areas. Since then more than 200 eye camps have been organized in remote villages of Alwar district. 22000 vision correction glasses have been provided, and more than 10,000 cataract surgeries have been performed by the Venu Eye Hospital, Delhi. All this has been provided to the poor patients free of cost.
In 2010, NGO SAPNA set up a Vision Centre in partnership with Venu Eye Institute and Research Center at Vijay Mandir, Alwar. The Vision Centre was managed by a fulltime Vision Technician (Optometrist) who does vision testing and refraction and also dispenses glasses.
Looking to the need and demand of eye care services in Alwar District, NGO SAPNA built the Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya at village kaduki on the outskirts of Alwar city. This charitable eye hospital is exclusively for the poor and underprivileged seeking secondary eye care services in Alwar, Rajasthan. The total projected cost of the single storey hospital was INR 100 lakhs. Coal India Limited (INR 65L) & Indian Potash Limited (INR 35L) supported us for the construction and furnishing of the eye hospital. We added value to the CSR money and constructed a beautiful two storey eye hospital which would be valued at more than INR 150 lakhs. We offer our deep gratitude to Smt Prabha Devi who was kind enough to donate the land for the project.
Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital is a 9355 square feet modern building with high quality and cost-effective construction. It is all set to roll out its services soon. The outpatient unit of Venu Vision Center has been shifted to the new building. The hospital has:

- Screening area (Refraction Room)
