Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya

SAPNA began to provide high-quality eye care to the underserved rural areas of Alwar in 2007. In 2010, a Vision Centre was set up at Vijay Mandir.This was followed by the construction of Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya which is located in the village Kaduki, Alwar and stands as a beacon of hope for the elderly & poor in the region. It became operational on 25th August,2017. Our primary mission is to provide secondary-level eye care services to those who cannot afford treatment at private hospitals or are unable to access eye care due to low penetration in rural areas.

We are indebted to the generous support of late Ms. Prabha Singh and the CSR initiative of Coal India Ltd., which made the construction of this state-of-the-art hospital possible.

Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya consists of a team of two full-time optometrists under the supervision of Pramukh Sewak, two part-time experienced surgeons, one part-time anesthetist, and an OT assistant.

Our Services

1. Core service: We provide free of cost secondary level eye care services. It is conducted via organizing outreach eye camps in villages of Alwar district, Rajasthan. Other service: Walk in OPD service constitutes providing eye care service to the rural population with minimal charge of INR 100. It is available from Monday to Saturday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, aimed at making eyecare facilities accessible to the rural areas.
2. Outreach camps are held twice a week in rural areas of Alwar district & neighbouring districts. These camps offer free eye check-ups to those in need. For individuals identified with cataract during these camps, we provide free transportation to and for from the facility, where cataract surgeries are performed without any charges from the patients. The next day after recovery, they are safely transported back to the camp location. In this way we can reach out to many poor patients who cannot come to Netralaya for checkups and cataract screening. Senior citizens are most vulnerable and have difficulty in moving out. The Camps suit their needs the most.

Team Netralaya

1. Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya functions on all days except Sundays. Residents of nearby villages come for checkups, treatment of minor problems and screening for cataract operation.

2. The hospital has three full time Optometrist, two part-time eye surgeons, one part time OT technician, one part time Anaesthetist and other supporting staff. 3. Cataract surgeries are performed twice a week as per patient footfalls.

Equipment’s at MGN

1. The Netralaya is fully equipped with latest eye equipment’s such as Phaco Machine (Johnson & Johnson vision) Microscope (Zeiss), Optical Biometry, Yag Laser (Appasamy associates), Slit Lamp (Zeiss), Auto Clave (Hansein Class B), ARK (Topcom), Retinoscope (Heine), 90D Lense, etc.

Likewise, in FY 2024-2025, we have worked for providing eye care for the vulnerable groups, especially women in the nearby rural areas. This includes conducting field visits to identify cataract patients. MGN recognizes the untended neglect often faced by the elderly. Our eye care services include identification of such patients, convincing them to have medically checked to managing their transport for appointments/surgeries/operation. Following is the analysis of our services in detail for FY 2024-2025.

Outcome

The focus of MGN is to deliver quality eye care to the rural vulnerable population of the Alwar district. It involves a holistic care from identifying cataract patients in free village camps organized regularly to provide quality healthcare including post – surgery follow ups. The FY 2024 – 2025 reflects our success in fulfilling this
goal. The annual data analysis highlighted the number of outreach cataract surgeries were double the number of paid cataract surgeries. Our post – surgery follow up visits by the patients have also yielded positive numbers. FY 2024 – 2025 witnessed 86.3% follow ups per cataract surgery (paid + free). Below is the age – wise gender comparison of the MGN patients catered to in FY 2024 – 2025. Since, we give special attention to the plight of women, this analysis reveals that apart from overall, in the category of 61 – 70 and 71 – 80 the number of women patients is higher than men. Impact

Mahatma Gandi Netralaya targets economically vulnerable population in the rural parts of Alwar district, Rajasthan. Women are most vulnerable group in terms of maintaining eye care. Yet they are the most exposed to pollution sources causing eye problems such as cataract. Our efforts in FY 2024-2025 have resulted in fruitful futures especially for these women. Our outreach camp, that is focused on identifying patients in the field and bringing them in for treatment has been instrumental in treatment women, along with BPL patients who were not charged fee for the medical treatment. In this context, more women have received our treatment 51.2% (593) compared to male patients 48.8% (564).

Our niche

Mahatma Gandhi Netralaya We are the only eye hospital in the district that keeps patients under care for 1 day after surgery and discharges them on the 2nd day, ensuring they receive proper guidance and medication before returning home. We also use hydrophobic foldable lenses. We strongly believe that everyone deserves the best possible vision, regardless of their economic condition. Therefore, we provide the highest quality lenses within our capacity and are continuously working to further improve the quality of lenses we use. Prospects Conduct 110 outreach eye camps in the surrounding areas to screen and treat patients. Perform 2,000 eye surgeries, including cataract operations, ensuring quality care for all patients. Expand services to include glaucoma and retina care, providing comprehensive eye treatment under one roof. Develop a sustainable, patient-friendly model where no patient is denied eye care due to financial constraints, ensuring accessibility and affordability for all.
